6 Nutrient Dense Kibble Toppers
For many families, kibble is the foundation of their dog’s diet. While high-quality kibble can provide a baseline of nutrition, it is still highly processed and often lacking in the fresh, living nutrients dogs would naturally thrive on. One of the simplest ways to elevate your dog’s meals is by adding fresh, whole-food toppers. Not only do toppers enhance the flavor and variety of your dog’s food, they also deliver important vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support long-term health.
Below are some of my favorite simple and effective toppers you can add right to your dog’s bowl.
Leafy Greens
Leafy greens like spinach, kale, Swiss chard, or dandelion greens are packed with antioxidants, fiber, and chlorophyll. These nutrients help support detoxification, digestion, and immune health. Dogs cannot fully break down raw leafy greens on their own, so it is best to lightly steam or puree them before serving. A spoonful or two mixed into kibble a few times per week can make a big difference.
Bone Broth
A warm, nourishing topper, bone broth is rich in amino acids, collagen, and minerals that support joint health, gut lining, and hydration. Pour a splash over your dog’s kibble to soften it and make it more enticing, especially for picky eaters or senior dogs with sensitive teeth. Choose unsalted, homemade bone broth (made without onions) whenever possible to avoid additives.
Eggs
Often called “nature’s multivitamin,” eggs are one of the most complete protein sources you can offer your dog. They provide amino acids, healthy fats, and essential vitamins like B12 and choline. Serve raw (from a trusted, fresh source) or soft-boiled for easy digestion. Adding an egg a few times a week can boost skin health, coat shine, and muscle support. If sourcing an eggs from a local farmer, you can feed the shell. If eggs are purchased from the store, it's best not to feed them because of the chemicals used to clean them.
Sardines
Sardines are a small but mighty powerhouse food. They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help reduce inflammation, support brain function, and keep skin and coats healthy. Offer them raw or choose canned in water with no salt added. Just one or two sardines a couple of times per week can provide incredible benefits without breaking the bank.
Lean Muscle Meat
Adding small amounts of raw or gently cooked lean meats such as beef chuck, turkey breast, or pork loin provides natural protein and iron. Fresh meat helps balance the highly processed proteins in kibble and can improve palatability. Always introduce slowly and avoid heavily seasoned or fatty cuts.
Herbal Infusions
Gentle herbal teas or infusions can also be a unique topper. Chamomile, nettle, or oatstraw infusions (cooled to room temperature) can be poured over kibble or mixed into broth. Depending on the herb, they can support relaxation, skin health, or digestion. Always research herbs carefully to ensure they are dog-safe and start with small amounts. Never feed caffeinated
teas.
Bringing It All Together
You do not need to add every topper every day. Think of toppers as a way to provide variety and balance over time. Rotate a few options throughout the week so your dog gets the benefits of different nutrients while keeping meals exciting.
Remember, toppers are not only about nutrition. They also show your dog love, care, and creativity in their meals. A few small additions can transform an ordinary bowl of kibble into a fresh, wholesome meal that truly nourishes body and mind.
